The CSD Pool now offers limited coverage for district owned and operated Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) or drones.

In 2021, we expanded coverage to assist with a growing need to address this exposure. Details include:

  1. The Property form can cover physical damage by a covered cause of loss to an owned Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) or drone, subject to a maximum limit of $25,000. The unmanned aircraft must weigh under 15 lbs. and be designed to operate remotely. The value can include equipment attached to the drone for its operation and cameras connected to and used on the drone. For coverage to apply, the sUAS must be listed on your Inland Marine Schedule.
  2. The Public Entity Liability form can, subject to a sublimit of $200,000 per named member and a $1,000,000 aggregate for all members, cover claims of bodily injury, property damage, or personal injury arising out of the operation of an unmanned aircraft. Certain conditions and exclusions apply, including a condition requiring full compliance of all federal, state and local laws and regulations, and an exclusion for any fines or penalties.

If, after reviewing your current coverage schedules, you determine there is a drone you would like to cover under both forms, please email us at pc@csdpool.org and provide its year, make, model, serial number and value and we will add it accordingly.

Usage of Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) or drones have unique risks associated with their use so evaluating the exposures is key for districts to utilize this asset successfully. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) offers best practices for drones; for more information on operating drones, starting a drone program, and understanding the laws behind drone safety, go to faa.gov.

If you have any questions on this additional coverage or for assistance in evaluating the exposure, please contact us at pc@csdpool.org.
