Safety Data Sheets, in general, provide information on chemical products that help users and handlers of those chemicals to make a risk assessment. They describe the hazards the chemical presents, and give information on handling, storage and emergency measures in case of an accident. (Chemical safety data sheets – COSHH (hse.gov.uk)). It is a vital resource for districts to have for the safety and well-being of their employees and to prevent losses and claims from occurring.

We spoke with Michael Rae from Eagle River Water and Sanitation about his experience with Vector SDS:

“Chemical inventory can be stored per location in the facility, then facility as a whole. It makes finding the SDS of a chemical much faster by scanning the QR code and only seeing the chemicals in your specific location (room/cabinet etc), and not the entire facility.,” Rae said.

Vector SDS has many features that help support district’s operations.

“The QR codes are very user friendly,” Rae said. “Just a quick scan with your phone and the SDS needed will pop up on your cell phone.”
Utilization of this program has also prevented loss.

“We had a near miss when a chemical got into an employee’s eye. The SDS was found quickly and the appropriate response to flush was taken and no further action was needed for this employee.”

The switch from a physical method of managing chemicals to a digital inventory was a game-changer for the district.

“This helps organize, store, and keep SDS up to date,” Rae said. “It’s easy for our employees to see and know what chemicals are in their facility and how to use them safely.”
